GOING BEYOND THE FOUR WALLS
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Divine Favour Ministries thrives on the great commission as stated in Mark 16:15. We are committed to the promulgation of God’s word and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with our community and our world. Evangelism, Outreach and Missions are the heartbeat of our ministry. For over three decades our ministry experience focused largely on inreach, “church” training and bible study. When introduced to a nursing home ministry opportunity in the early 90′s, our eyes were opened to outreach ministry outside the safety of the four walls.
Traditionally believers have tended to define spiritual growth as disengagement from the world rather than engagement with the world. Divine Favour’s spiritual growth was exponential and explosive once we decided to reach into our community and help disadvantaged youth, seniors, HIV/Aids patients and female entrepreneurs in third world countries with micro-loans. The areas mentioned are only a few of the pockets of our outreach and missions. We are by definition a Missional Church.
The missional church can be anywhere at anytime and it holds closely to the scripture that says; ‘for where two or three gather together because they are mine I am there among them (Matthew 18:20. NLT).’ The goal is not one large weekly gathering in an appointed building but rather the growing of relationships through people. People are the church. Take out the people and the church ceases to exist. Not so in the Western modern church. The people fill the building and the church is known for its location and facility.
The church must be careful not to confuse an assimilation strategy for church involvement with a spiritual formation model for community building. Both are necessary, but they are very different. An assimilation strategy defines how one gets involved in the life and programs of a church; a spiritual formation model defines the essential outcomes the church is attempting to get working into the lives of the people of the church (Frazee. 2001:67).’
Bill Hybels states ‘that it is more than just working with other people, its doing life deeply with one another as we serve together (Hybels. 2002:74).’ Missional leaders know that church is about the life long relationships that are built over time rather than the programs that are promoted as more important. Missional leaders are usually the “square” in a room with “circle” leaders. We think and act differently than the traditional western model of organized church.
Divine Favour is a 501-c-3 non-profit, well organized and knee deep into the community. We are reaching out to our female veterans, homeless families, community youth , active adults , and older adults (age 62+) . We are the emerging church model, yet as visionaries ,spellbound by the past as we earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints (Jude3).
Missional Churches realize that all things new eventually become old, thus we often remind ourselves of the question – what does it mean to be ” called out” to the community. Join us on the streets, in the nursing home, at the club, on the court or the green. Our location is TBD (to be determined) our mission is clearly defined – go ye into all the world!
